On Monday 4th of January, the British Government announced a new national lockdown. England will enter its toughest nationwide lockdown since March, with schools closed until mid-February and non-essential businesses forced to shut their physical doors once again.

Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are also already in or set for the same levels of lockdown as England. Both Northern Ireland and Scotland are to reintroduce legally enforceable stay-at-home orders. But it’s not all doom and gloom for small to medium-sized businesses that are willing to invest in their business’ online presence and health. A recent study from Accenture has found that consumers are now, more than ever shopping locally, and intent on supporting local businesses.

There are many examples in the British media of businesses turning a crisis into a positive. These businesses have fundamentally changed their way of operating to give their customers local products and services even though their customers cannot physically interact with their business.

So what can businesses do to protect themselves from going under?

On Tuesday 5th of January, the British Government announced £4.6 billion in extra grants for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses worth up to £9,000 per property to help businesses through this new wave. Local authorities throughout the 4 nations also have access to discretionary funds that are specifically set aside for small to medium-sized businesses.

Some local authorities are offering website and E-commerce support grants to help businesses, especially those that trade on the high street, to get online and start making money through E-commerce.
